Home Remedies For Cough - Look no further
On this home remedies for cough page I have discussed many easy to find ingredients that will help you find something that will sooth your cough.
However, you may wish to check out my natural
and herbal remedies pages as well as a page about stopping cough folklore
It is important to note that while home remedies for cough do have their place, they also have their limits and so you must seek medical attention if your symptoms are particularly severe, long-standing, not resolving or you are getting sick in other ways in addition to having a cough.
You can check out the when
to seek help section of this page
for more specific information.
There are many reasons one might have a cough and so home remedies for cough may not always be the appropriate way forward, especially if it's not from an everyday simple cough and cold.
Hot
toddy
Almost everyone will remember their granny talking about
taking a hot toddy for medicinal purposes when one has a cough and cold.
Since there are at least a couple of good recipes that I know about, I decided to put the details on a hot toddy page of its own.
Apple
Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is one of the most famous old home remedies for cough and in fact Apple cider vinegar is one of the oldest home remedies for many ailments and cough is but one of them.
This is the kind of thing your granny used to make.
Mix a tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar with a teaspoon of honey, quarter of a teaspoon of ground ginger and the same again of red cayenne pepper. Add two tablespoons of water and there is your medicine.
Take 1 teaspoon of this mixture two or three times a day to soothe your cough.
Cloves cough mixture
One of the simplest home remedies for cough that I know of and yet effective for reducing the painful spasms of coughing during illnesses like bronchitis or asthma or any other cough that produces pain.
Crush a clove of garlic and mix it with three tablespoons of honey and then add three drops of clove oil. Take 1 teaspoon of this mixture to or three times a day and especially before going to bed as it will help you to have a more restful night sleep.
Grape cough syrup
If you happen to have some grapes or a carton of pure grape juice in the house then you may wish to try making one of the simplest and effective home remedies for cough that there is.
Mix half and half pure grape juice and honey together and leave it to stand for several hours. 1 teaspoon of this natural cough remedy two or three times a day will act as an expectorant and allow you to cough up the phlegm that is sitting in your chest that you can't get rid of.
Licorice
Licorice tea is known to sooth a cough, especially stubborn and long-standing ones. It also encourages sputum that is in the chest to be coughed up and got rid of. (This is also a useful quick fix for constipation sometimes).
Linseed
tea
Take about 15 g of crushed linseed, and steep in a couple of boiling water for around 15 min. The mixture should be covered while it is steeping. At the end of the process, you should strain the linseed out and drink the remaining mixture while it
is still warm.
This can be repeated once or twice a day and is said to be excellent for soothing chesty cough that is leaving the chest feeling sore.
Onion cough syrup
Onions are part of the allium family , as is garlic which of course is famous for its medicinal properties so it should be of no surprise that onions also have therapeutic uses and one of those happens to be for a cough.
In actual fact, onion cough syrup is one of the oldest herbal cough remedies that we know about and is particularly useful for thinning phlegm that is on the thick side and therefore difficult to cough up.
To make this cough syrup you will need the juice of an onion, which can be extracted by chopping up the onion as finely as possible or you may wish to use a mechanical juice or blender. Then mix the onion juice with honey (one medium onion per tablespoon of honey).
Leave it to stand for several hours and you're onion cough syrup is ready for use whereupon you take 1 teaspoon twice daily.
Vicks Vapor Rub
I am not sure in all honesty how effective this cough remedy will be but since it is incredibly easy to try out, and safe, I see no harm in mentioning it.
Vicks vapor rub is an old remedy for clearing the sinuses and chest. It is said if you apply Vicks to the
bottom of your feet and then wear a pair of socks over the top before you go to bed you will be able to have a restful night sleep. As I said, I don't know if this works or not, but there is no harm in trying.
So that is the end of my list of some of the oldest home remedies for cough that I know about. I hope that you enjoy trying these out when the need arises, but as I said at the beginning of this page, it is important that you seek medical assistance sometimes and that you know the limits of these wonderful old
remedies.
If you enjoyed reading this page, then you might wish to look at my natural and herbal remedies for cough pages, or possibly even my hot toddies
