Natural Remedies for Gout Can Help
Treatment of Gout can bring Natural Gout Relief
Searching natural remedies for Gout? I sympathise. Gout is an extremely common and incredibly painful condition which is very prevalent in the Western World.
Would you like to find out if there are any natural remedies for gout that are safe and effective as well as nontoxic that can provide natural gout relief?
In actual fact there are quite a few natural gout relief remedies that can be used in the treatment of gout and I will discuss some of them right here on this page so do read on.
I am going to make the assumption that if you are here on this page, it was no accident. You are here because you yourself have gout or you know someone who does and you are looking for natural remedies for Gout.
That being the case, I will then assume that you will already have been to your physician and so already know what gout is and what treatment of gout modern medicine can offer. However, for the benefit of anyone reading this page who does not know what gout is I will briefly talk about it now
What Is Gout?
Gout is actually an arthritic type of condition, which usually affects the toes though can sometimes affect other joints. Spmetimes this is known as Gouty Arthritis
It differs from other types of arthritis in that it has a different aetiology or cause. In the case of gout, it is caused by a build-up of a substance called uric acid in the bloodstream, which is usually excreted from the body by the kidneys.
The circulating excess uric acid eventually finds a home in the spaces of the joint and then in time, turns into crystals. However the body’s immune system does not recognise the crystals so treats them as a foreign invader and attacks.
These attacks occur suddenly, usually overnight so that the sufferer will wake with an extremely red, hot, inflamed and painful joint, usually the big toe in one or other of the feet, though it can be both.
This pain can be so severe that it literally cripples and without treatment, will last 7 – 10 days which is an awful long time when you are in extreme pain.
As time passes, the attacks tend to get more severe and more frequent and since each flare up will cause joint damage because the crystals start to turn into hard stones, the risk of serious complication is ever present and sometimes surgical intervention becomes necessary. A scary thought for anyone.
As an interesting aside, the uric acid crystals are the same material that can also give rise to kidney stones as the uric acid in the kidneys also turn to crystals and then kidney stones.
So natural remedies for Gout can also benefit other, related conditions and -in certain degree- help to prevent them.
Who Gets Gout?
- In theory anyone can get gout but there do seem to be some factors that make it more likely.
- A family history of gout
- Overweight
- Sedentary Lifestyle
- Men aged from late 30s to their 50s seem to be most prone
- It is more unusual for women but those that do tend to be aged in their 50s and 60s (this is believed to be due to hormonal changes after menopause)
- People who consume high amounts of protein (protein is broken down by the liver and the liver makes the uric acid for the kidneys to get rid of. Sometimes the kidney struggle to do this and sometimes the liver produces too much uric acid
- People who drink lots of alcohol on a regular basis
- Foot trauma (including surgery)
- As a by-product of other Medical Illnesses and treatments
What Can Be Done?
It would be irresponsible of me not to talk about the structural natural remedies for Gout, like the lifestyle changes that you may need to consider in order to prevent gout in the first place or to reduce its severity and frequency if you already have it.
Gout used to be called Rich Man’s Disease because it was noted that most people who got this condition were actually rich lazy men who took no exercise and over indulged in rich and fatty foods as well as alcohol.
This leads to an obvious conclusion that these are the things that need to be addressed.
I have no doubt that in your search for natural gout relief your physician will have already gone through some natural remedies for Gout, but to be absolutely sure, I have some information below and also on my Gout Diet Page (which you should definately check out).
- Alcohol should be reduced and better still eliminated – it interferes with the removal of uric acid by the kidneys.
- Avoid excess amounts of protein, especially those high in purines
- Excess vitamin A – If you take supplements, ensure you do not take more than 5000 i.u. daily
- Avoid or Eliminate refined sugars – cakes, biscuits, sweets etc.
- Take regular exercise – at least 15 minutes daily
- Drink lots of water to cleanse the kidneys
- If you are overweight, then try to lose some.
It is important to realise that your gout did not occur overnight, even if the first attack did. It took a long while for the uric acid to slowly build over time to a point where it began to settle in the joints and form crystals which then lead to the symptoms.
As a result, it is clear that although there are natural remedies for Gout available (and many do work very well in the treatment of gout) making natural gout relief possible, you do still need to address lifestyle factors; otherwise the problem will keep recurring.
Natural Remedies for Gout
Acute Phase
These next couple of natural remedies for Gout would be my stock items to keep in the house if I was a gout sufferer so that they are there the minute you need them and can start taking them straight away without having to go and buy them first. This is especially the case if you are looking for fast natural gout relief
They are both incredibly useful but you still need to do some deeper treatment and also cleaning up your act in terms of diet and lifestyle for real life changing success.
So my suggestion is to try these natural remedies for Gout and Gouty Arthritis and keep them in stock while you are working on the rest. No need to do it in stages.
Colchicum
My favourite of natural remedies for Gout in an acute attack has to be a homeopathic remedy called colchicum. Its full name is colchicum autumnale and it is actually derived from a beautiful Autumn Crocus which is also sometimes known as Meadow Saffron or Naked Lady.
This natural treatment of gout remedy is particularly suitable for those who get gout in the joint of the big toe (which is the most common location) or in the heel.
The joint will be swollen and acutely painful. Sometimes the sufferer will notice that the pain gets especially worse by evening time and he is almost beside himself.
He will also be extremely sensitive to touch and pressure of the affect part which may mean he cannot even bear to wear a sock or shoe and if anyone accidentally. He will also be in much more pain if he attempts to move about.
This homeopathic gout treatment can be taken as a 6c potency 3 times a day or as a 30c twice a day for the duration of the attack. It should relieve the pain and swelling as well as reduce the duration of the attack.
It will not however, stop it coming back but if you are in the middle of an attack right now, then all you are interested in is getting rid of the pain. Am I right or am I right?
Belladonna
Another particularly useful and effective help in the list of natural remedies for Gout for an acute and sudden attack happens to be another homeopathic one, this time called Belladonna which is Italian for “beautiful lady” and indeed the plant that it is made from is very striking.
It is derived from the poisonous plant Deadly Nightshade, which fortunately has absolutely no poisonous properties in the homeopathic form you will be relieved to hear.
This remedy is also extremely suitable for gout where the affected joint is extremely swollen and bright red (like in the photograph) but also the pain will be hot and most importantly of a throbbing or pulsating nature. It is possible that the whole foot (or hand) may be swollen though the redness would usually be in the joint area only unless it is an especially severe case.
The person needing this remedy, would usually be quite restless and may find it hard to keep still, even though mobility is difficult and causes further pain.
This remedy can be taken as a 6c potency 3 times a day or as a 30c twice a day for the duration of the attack. It should relieve the pain and swelling as well as reduce the duration of the attack.
For a Deeper Longer Term Effect
As I said before, the pain is usually someone’s first consideration but when that is settled down it is time to look deeper into more preventive natural remedies for Gout .
There is not much point applying a band aid if you do not address the underlying reason that you keep requiring the band aids.
So these next suggestions could, if you wanted form part of a treatment plan that will work very nicely alongside of your diet and lifestyle changes which I really hope by now, you are realizing you do have to look at.
Cherries
For those of you that love fruit, this one on the list of natural remedies for Gout is for you. It has been an old wives tale for many years that cherries can reduce the pain and frequency of gout attacks.
In June 2010 in Italy a small study was published where 24 people took a tablespoon of cherry juice concentrate (equivalent to 45 – 60 cherries) twice daily for a minimum of four months. Almost all of them experienced a greater than 50% reduction in frequency of the attacks.
And more than a third of those (who were not taking drugs to lower uric acid in the blood) actually were free of any gout attack at all for between 4 – 6 months. There is more evidence to back this up nowadays but for me, this study says to me that there is something to it, and so as I began my research.
I soon began to see that this was indeed a marvelous truth and then as I looked into it further, it became apparent that the cherries that had the best effect (and indeed the ones used in the study above) were the Montmorency Tart Cherries from the Michigan Area of the USA.
However if the thought of swallowing up to 60 cherries in one liquid gulp twice a day is a little hard to stomach, you may be relieved to know that you can still benefit as it is possible to buy it in a capsule form either on its own or in combination with glucosamine and chondroitin to help support and repair the joint.
What a neat way to treat gout naturally without harmful side effects and toxins that the drugs modern medicine offers can so often cause. Who would have thought that the humble cherry could offer us so much and yet clearly it does just that.
Natural Liver and Kidney Detox
Now one thing I haven’t yet really discussed is the liver in relation to gout (and arthritis too actually) but I should.
Hopefully you recall that I mentioned that uric acid comes from proteins that are broken down by the liver. Well mostly I have found that people with these conditions almost always have a toxic liver, which of course will not help it to do its job very well.
The same applies with the kidneys. Their job is to excrete all the excess uric acid and yet it struggles to do so.
So it naturally follows that if the liver and kidneys are the main organs that need to be working really well in order to not develop gout in the first place or to be able to successfully treat it once it is occurring.
My experience tells me that almost all cases I have ever known have had toxic livers and kidneys, then it goes without saying (even though I am saying it) that a natural detox for your liver and kidneys is a must. No question about it. If you have gout or arthritis, your kidneys and liver needs some help.
It is precisely because a Natural Liver and Kidney detox is so important I have written a separate page on this subject so please see the menu bar on the left to learn more about it.
